In civil engineering, we need to understand the how a particular structure would behave under the action of certain load or forces. This branch of engineering science that study the effect of force on any kind of boy at its state of rest or motion is called as mechanics. Mechanics is studied by understanding its various classification, which initially starts with engineering mechanics.
Engineering mechanics is the branch of engineering science which deals with the effect of force or forces acting on a rigid body only when it is in the state of rest or motion. Hence, engineering mechanics exclusively studies rigid body. Based on the study on a body at rest or motion, engineering mechanics can be statics or dynamics.
As per the definition, as the science focus force and rigid body, we will start studying the mechanics from the bottom.
A rigid body is defined as a definite quantity of matter, the parts of which are fixed in position relative to each other. Physical bodies in actual are never absolutely rigid and they would undergo slight deformation under the action of loads. But, if the deformation is negligible we can say that the body is rigid.
Force is an external agency that change the state of a body either from rest to motion, or motion to rest or motion to retard. A particular force is defined by parameters magnitude, direction and the point of application.
Force is a vector quantity with a magnitude and a direction represented as FÃ
The unit for force is Newton (N) in SI system, kgF in MKS system and Dyne in CGS system.
