A plumb bob or a plummet can be defined as a pointed weight attached to the end of the string which is used to determine the vertical reference line. The reference line is called a plumb.
Plumb is defined as the vertical equivalent to a spirit level. It is a tool that has been used for thousands of years, dating back to Ancient Egypt.
Objectives of a Plumb Bob
The main objective of the plumb bob is to determine the nadir, which is the local vertical direction pointing towards the gravity.
- Transfer the points to the ground
- Make the ranging poles vertical
- Transfer the points in a linear range to the ground
- To centre theodolites, compass, plane table, and other surveying equipment.
