Pineapple Building, Abu Dhabi - Construction & Architectural Features

One of the iconic buildings of Abu Dhabi, "The Pineapple Building", formally known as Al Bahar Towers, is an example of one of kind architecture. The 29 storey building houses the Abu Dhabi Investment Council and the head office for Al Hilal Bank. The structure has a honey combs like exterior, and constructed between Al Saada and Al Salam Streets.

Al Bahr Towers is designed by Aedas UK, and constructed by Al-Futtaim Carillion. The aspiration was to achieve a highly glazed building, allowing a great view from the inside and providing the best possible level of internal visual and thermal comfort. Design drivers was to develop an energy efficient and iconic building, inspired by the local vernacular Islamic architecture.

1. Pineapple Building formally known as Al Bahar Tower is 145 meters high with 29 stories.

3. Inspired by the shading section of mosques called mashrabiya, installed it in the tower, making the tower even more unique and eye-catching. 
4. Mashrabiya is a unique shading system that is commonly used in Islamic lattices.

5. Mashrabiya concept uses an exterior covered using 2,000 umbrella-like shading elements that open and close in response to sun's path.                                                                                                                   
6. The exterior umbrella façades act as cooling aids that are controlled via a building management system that creates a dynamic and intelligent façade.
7. PTFE-coated glass fiber mesh was identified as the most durable and best-performing option for this façade.
8. PTFE fiberglass coating is capable of withstanding high temperatures and it is a ‘self-cleaning’ fabric, which helps reduce cleaning and maintenance time. The final fabric presents an open area of 15% and a light transmission of 25%.
9. Exterior shading devices control glare, save energy by reducing building's AC consumption.
10. Won several prices with titles Best overall Project in the Middle East’ in 2013
11. The eco-friendly towers are one of the first buildings in the Persian Gulf region to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating.
