Repointing and Tuckpointing are two mortar joint repair processes which involves removal of old mortar from the joints and filling it with new mortar. Repointing involves replacing mortar joints in bricks that are cracked or damaged. Tuckpointing involves filling small cracks in bricks with new mortar.
Repointing is an older technique used to repair brickwork. It was originally developed as a means of repairing old masonry walls. Today, it is also used to restore brickwork that has been damaged by water infiltration.
Tuckpointing is a newer method of brick repair. It was first introduced in the United States during the early 1900s. Tuckpointing is now widely used throughout Europe and North America.
