Quantity of Water for Cement Concrete Mix

The quantity of water required for a given concrete mix is the total consumption of water for the cement plus the consumption of aggregates. Water for a given concrete mix is measured either in liters or gallons.

Water required for 1 bag of cement = 11.667 liters
Water required for aggregates          =  5% weight of the aggregates.

Note:1 bag of cement = 0.0354cu.m or 1.25cu.ft

Quantity of Water for Concrete Mix 1:2:4

Firstly, the amount of cement, fine and coarse aggregates are determined.
  1. Quantity of Cement = 0.0354cu.m
  2. Quantity of Fine Aggregate = 2 x 0.0345cu.m = 0.069 cu.m
  3. Quantity of Coarse aggregate = 4 x .0345 cu.m = 0.138 cu.m
Hence,
Total weight of aggregates = 0.069+.138 = 0.207cu.m

  1. Water for 1 bag of cement = Water for 0.0345cu.m of cement = 11.667 litres
  2. Water for aggregates of 0.207cu.m = 5% of weight of aggregates                                                                                                          =(5/100) x 0.207 = 0.01035cu.m = 10.35litres
Note: 1cu.m = 1000litres
Total water required for 1:2:4 concrete mix is 11.667 + 10.35 =  22 litres
